    Artist

Mai Abe’s deep connection to historic and contemporary Japanese Artistic practice began over 2 decades ago when she studied painting and drawing in Tochigi, Japan. As a painter in Japan, Mai’s portraits explored the human condition and her artistic process was shaped by the subjects she was commissioned to paint. By moving to the UK and uprooting her practice, Mai has been exploring new terrain that digs beneath the topsoil and explores hidden complexities.

Whether exploring the hidden geological structures that shape the physical world around us, or by exploring and questioning the immutability of cultural symbols, Mai’s work explores hybridity. Mai’s work provokes the viewer to consider hybridity between human cultures, to consider the interconnectedness of humans within an ecosystem and ultimately to reconsider the effect of human culture on the natural world.

A practicing artist with over 5 years professional experience of selling artwork, devising and running workshops and completing an Oxford Brookes foundation Degree in Art and Design Practice.
